Measuring the carbon footprints of our products

Our range of ECO solutions enable our customers to develop competitive and sustainable products. To achieve the lowest carbon footprint, a comprehensive evaluation of upstream scope 3 emissions is crucial. One effective approach is the assessment of product carbon footprints (PCF) to measure the environmental impact of our products (based on greenhouse gas emissions) from cradle to gate. In other words, the carbon impact of our product from resource extraction or “cradle” up to the factory gate. PCFs provide a quantifiable metric to substantiate sustainability claims and offer valuable data for our customers to calculate the PCF of their own applications, aiding them in achieving ambitious sustainability goals.

We analysed the inputs (raw materials and utilities such as electricity) and outputs (emissions and waste) across the entire product lifecycle, converting various emissions into carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). This helped to determine the product carbon footprint or emissions per unit of product. By calculating PCFs, we were able to identify areas with significant environmental impact and is implementing targeted measures to reduce and ideally eliminate these hotspots.

So far, we have verified the PCFs of over 100 products from multiple production sites. All PCFs comply with ISO 14040 standards and have been independently verified by Ethos Research and by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS Global Services) as part of the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) audits.
